Private Boater Guide School

Do you want to increase your whitewater paddling skills? Have you ever wanted to train as a whitewater rafting guide but don’t have an entire season to commit to a company? Would you like to take your own raft trips with friends? Have you ever wanted to row your own raft down the Grand Canyon? If you answered yes to any or all of these questions, you are exactly who we had in mind when we designed our Private Boater Guide School course! Over the 5 days of this course, you will learn the basics to paddle and/or row a raft in whitewater. Our ACA-certified instructors will teach you the strokes you need to move the boat, help you develop your eye to read a river, and give you valuable mental tools to carry with you on any river you want to run.
Our instructors are ACA-certified (learn more at https://americancanoe.org/…/become-an-instructor/…) in rafting and swiftwater rescue in addition to their personal experience on rivers around the world. They are passionate about their work, some having worked in the outdoor education and recreation fields for over twenty years.
Your course fee includes all necessary equipment (rafts, paddles, frames, oars, pfd, helmet, throw ropes, etc…), shuttle to and from our river venues, lunch every day of the course, and camping (tent rental and upgraded lodging are available).

– Rigging and securing your raft
– Safety considerations and risk management
– Reading the river and hazard recognition
– Paddle and rowing strokes
– Raft control and maneuvering
– Swiftwater rescue basics
Rivers: New or Gauley Rivers (flow dependent)
