Fayetteville’s Cryptid Weekend 2026

March 7 @ 9:00 am - March 8 @ 5:00 pm

March 7–8, 2026 | Downtown Fayetteville & Trails

Fayetteville is going full folklore for Fayetteville’s Cryptid Weekend, March 7–8, 2026! Venture into town and the surrounding trails as some of West Virginia’s most legendary cryptids emerge from the shadows.

Spot familiar Appalachian legends like Bigfoot and Mothman roaming downtown, popping up along trails, and making surprise appearances throughout the weekend. Bring your camera and see if you can capture cryptids “in the wild” — wandering through town, lurking near trailheads, or blending into everyday Fayetteville life.

The weekend kicks off on Saturday, March 7, with the opening of a Cryptid Art Exhibition at the Love Hope Center for the Arts, featuring regional artists inspired by folklore, myth, and Appalachian legends.

Throughout the weekend, enjoy a Cryptid-themed Art Walk through your favorite Fayetteville businesses, with special stops, themed displays, and surprises along the way. Shops, galleries, and community spaces will embrace the strange and unusual as downtown transforms into a playful celebration of West Virginia’s most mysterious creatures. There will also be a cryptid scavenger hunt through town.

Whether you’re a folklore fan, an art lover, a photographer, or just curious about what goes bump in the woods — Fayetteville’s Cryptid Weekend is your chance to explore Fayetteville from a whole new perspective.

Pro tip: Keep your camera ready… you never know when a cryptid might appear.

Thank you to our generous sponsor!

Cryptids in the Wild — Fayetteville’s Cryptid Weekend

During Fayetteville’s Cryptid Weekend, legendary creatures will be roaming both downtown and local trails throughout the weekend. Visitors may catch glimpses of Bigfoot, Mothman, and other mysterious beings as they explore town — but sightings are never guaranteed!

Cryptids in the Wild

Some cryptids prefer to stay hidden deep in their natural habitat. These wild cryptids may appear along select trails, including the Town Park Trail and other locations with  parking access at scheduled times throughout the weekend.

Wild cryptids will be on the move, so you’ll have to keep watch and try to spot them as you hike.

For everyone’s safety and to protect our local trails:

  •  Please remain on marked trails
  • Do not leave the trail to approach wild cryptids
  •  Observe from a respectful distance — cryptids are shy creatures!

Town Cryptids

Not all cryptids are elusive! Friendly Town Cryptids may wander downtown Fayetteville and occasionally stop for photos, high-fives, and memorable encounters.

Exact roaming times and potential sighting areas will be shared closer to the event.

Follow along for updates:

  • Visit Fayetteville Facebook page

  • VisitFayettevilleWV.com
