12 Social Distancing Adventure Ideas In Fayetteville

Tired of looking at the same four walls? We are ready to welcome you into the fresh air of the great outdoors with natures renewing energy. Fayetteville is a mecca for outdoor fun providing plenty of space for social distancing. The health and safety of our community and our visitors are a top concern as we slowly and responsibly begin to reopen. We continue to follow CDC guidelines and the guidance of the Fayette County Health Department as we move forward.

We encourage our visitors to be courteous as we adapt to new changes. We encourage visitors to avoid overcrowded trails and attractions. We are observing the CDC’s minimum recommended social distancing of six feet from other people; and, washing hands frequently and properly. Some activities require participants to wear some type of face-covering when appropriate.

1. Paddle Boarding Mountain Surf Paddle Sports

Mountain Surf Paddle Sports is offering “no-contact rentals”
You can call ahead at 304-785-4108 to schedule a pickup time. Please call at least the day before you wish to rent. Same-day rentals are not guaranteed.
-Go to our website www.mtnsurfps.com to pay, fill out a waiver, and rental agreement. (You can pay in cash if you have exact change)
– Come to our office/home location in Fayetteville – We will not be operating out of Water Stone Outdoors at this time (we will give our address when you make the appointment).

Measures being taken to ensure your safety:
– All of our boards, paddles, and pfds, and straps will be sanitized before you pick them up. Once sanitized no one will be touching them until you pick them up.
– We will have a drop off area you will place the boards, paddles, pfds, and straps where we will wash and sanitize them.
– We can do everything else online to ensure no contact.

– Small group tours (6 or less) – We feel we could remain socially distant on the water with groups of 6 or less. You can book a private paddleboard tour.

2. Mountain Biking Arrowhead Bike Farm

Arrowhead Bike Farm is a gathering point for adventurers of all kinds. Arrowhead Bike Farm is the destination for mountain bikers ideally positioned at the entrance of New River Gorge’s best riding and hiking trails! You can rent a bike and ride directly to the trails or bring your own. After your ride, you can enjoy outdoor dining on the deck at The Handle Bar with a variety of fresh local and national craft beer for after your paddling, biking, hiking or climbing adventure. Arrowhead offers riding clinics and bike tours.

3. Bridge Walk

Bridge Walk offers guided tours of the New River Gorge Bridge from the catwalk 25’ beneath the Bridge. Experience stunning views from the catwalk on top of one of the top 10 bridges in the world.

Bridgewalk is implementing new guidelines.

All guest must:
•wear a mask
•wear gloves
•maintain a minimum of 6’ distance with others outside of your group.

4. Horseback Ridging Equestrian Adventures or Cowboy Town

5. ATV TOUR New River ATV

By nature, New River ATV tours are social distanced. They have modified their check in and sanitation procedures to comply with West Virginia’s reopening policies and CDC recommendations. For our guests, it’s the same great tour with minimal hassle. So get out of the house, hang out with your favorite guide, and see the New River Gorge our way!

9. Kayak & Paddle Boating at Boley Lake

Babcock State Park is just a short drive from Fayetteville and is home to Boley Lake. Boley Lake at Babcock State Park is perfect for a leisurely paddle adventure. Rentals are available onsite at the lake for paddle boats, canoes, and kayaks.

10. Hiking

We are fortunate to have an endless amount of beautiful hiking trails in and around Fayetteville. If you want to explore off the beaten path we can point you in the direction of some of the lesser-known trails in the area that are a real treat. Stop by the visitor center for guidance.

11. Water falling

West Virginia is known as the birthplace of rivers and with that comes lots of breathtaking waterfalls. On a busy weekend, popular falls can become crowded making it hard to practice social distancing. Stop by the visitor center and we can point you in the direction of some of the lesser-known waterfalls in the area for fun exploring. Some of our favorite waterfalls can be found on the Hawks Nest Rail Trail along Mill Creek.

12. Scenic Drives

Winding roads and mountain views make for great scenic drives. One of our favorite scenic drives is the Fayette Station Road Tour. This one-hundred-year-old road used to be the only route across the New River Gorge before the New River Gorge Bridge was built. There are wide pull-offs where you can stop and take in the beauty of this massive structure. Enjoy the history of the New River Gorge Bridge with this ride along the audio tour.

To access Fayette Station Road, turn right onto Lansing-Edmond Road from US-19 North. At ¼ mile turn right onto Fayette Station Road. Turn left at the fork. Follow the signs to Fayette Station.
