New Business Feature: Wild Art & Wonderful Things

Aptly named with a big personality, Wild Art & Wonderful Things reflects the vibrant art and charm of Fayetteville. We are excited to welcome Brannon Ritterbush and her new shop to town!  The space is brimming with handmade pottery, paintings, photographs, hand-carved wooden pieces, copper mixed metal art, and stained glass along with unique gift items.  “We are oozing with beautifully crafted things and thoughtful gifts,” said Brannon. Brannon described what makes her products so special, “…they benefit our local community and give talented artists a place to be seen and appreciated.” Most of the items are local and the ones that are not raise funds towards charitable organizations. You could easily discover a new treasure with each visit.

Brannon said her husband and mom really inspired her to pursue her dream. Her mother started a boutique in Georgia not knowing a single thing about running a business and turned it into a thriving business while developing lifelong friendships along the way. “My husband, Kinsey is my biggest supporter, encourager and believes in me when I have trouble believing in myself…he came up with the name Wild Art Wonderful Things and has given me all the confidence and tools I need to run things successfully”, said Brannon.
Kinsey grew up here and it is where they wanted to start the first chapter of their marriage. “There’s no place quite like it. We love living here and to now have a small business here is a dream come true,” said Brannon. Brannon fell in love with the community here in Fayetteville. “The people that make up this town are incredibly unique, compassionate, welcoming, not to mention talented! There is a lot of darkness that surrounds the world, but Fayetteville reminds me that there is an even brighter light that cuts through it. These people love hard and care deeply about others. In addition to all of that, there is so much creativity and raw talent flowing through Fayetteville just waiting to be showcased, which makes it a perfect fit for a shop like mine,” said Brannon.

Fayetteville: Meet the Artist-Ginger Danz

The Fayetteville “Meet the Artist” is our new series celebrating our growing art scene by highlighting local artists and the diversity of art you can find in Fayetteville!  We wanted to time our first Meet the Artist with the upcoming Art House Night at The Grove, by featuring the talented Ginger Danz.

Born in Indiana, Ginger has been creating art as long as she can remember. Her she started pursuing art in earnest in high school and she kept creating art when she became a counselor.  In 2010 she juried into Tamarack and decided to become a professional artist. “Making art has always been part of who I am; very rarely do I view something beautiful without calculating how to capture it in painting,” said Danz. Ginger moved to Charleston, West Virginia in 1998 and made several trips to Fayetteville. She visited Cathedral Café and fell in love with the “vibe” of the town. She and her husband moved to Fayetteville in 2004.

Danz says she finds inspiration in the colors and textures of nature and animals. She loves to paint farm animals, especially goats and chickens.  Danz said, “They make me laugh, and capturing their beauty and quirkiness is a goal. I love putting a smile on people’s faces.” Her subjects have included her friends’ Nubian goats Lucille and Celeste, and countless roosters and hens. Danz likes to capture a feeling of joy with her art and she hopes that it resonates with the viewer.

Danz primarily uses acrylic paint, and also likes to create with paper collage using ripping and gluing techniques to create textured backgrounds for her paintings. When she is not creating art you can find her outside enjoying the local trails. She also enjoys baking, reading and volunteering.

After returning from a trip to Italy last year, Danz was inspired to create a series inspired by the country’s beautiful scenery.  Danz’s current work has been focusing on abstract landscapes inspired by the beauty of West Virginia, mainly nearby Summersville Lake and the New River Gorge.  Danz said she likes to “capture the feel, the colors, and the “NRGy” of the New River Gorge.” Danz remarked on the large number of artists working in the area, and the high level of community & merchant support for the arts.

Danz teaches art at the New River Gorge Learning Cooperative, as well as community art classes and workshops, and serves as Chair of the Fayetteville Arts Coalition. The Fayetteville Arts Coalition works to support local artists and to promote the arts in our community. We are excited that the Fayetteville Arts Coalition has made its new home here in the Fayetteville Convention and Visitor Center Building. Danz said the Fayetteville Arts Coalition will be offering regular art classes and art events in the coming months, so stay tuned to their facebook page for more information: www.facebook.com/FayettevilleArtsCoalition/

You can see Ginger Danz’s Art at The Grove, where she is the featured artist for the month of August. There will be an artist reception August  3rd from 7pm to 9pm. Her work can also be found at www.gingerdanz.com.

Free Fishing Weekend Fayetteville West Virginia

West Virginia’s Free Fishing Weekend is June 10-11th. During this weekend residents and nonresidents can fish in West Virginia free without a license! West Virginia’s Free Fishing Weekend is part of National Fishing and Boating Week. It is the perfect weekend to plan a visit to Fayetteville where we are surrounded by great fishing areas. We talked with Bobby Bower from Pro River Outfitters. Bower is a known fish whisperer and expert guide in the area and he shared the best spots to hit  up this weekend. Bower said some great family friendly near by spots are Boley Lake , Plum Orchard Lake, and Summersville Lake. Boley Lake at Babcock State Park was stocked with catfish gearing up for this weekend.  With the rain winding down the conditions have also improved on the New and Gauley Rivers.  Trout season has come to an end for stocking, but small mouth  fishing is just getting fired up!  Bower said, ” The New River views and water quality are just second to none and it’s a great river to fish.” West Virginia’s Free Fishing Weekend is  a great opportunity  to dive into fishing for the first time. If you already have your license it’s a great excuse to introduce someone to the sport. They might get hooked!

We also spoke with another avid angler, Devin Schamp who prefers small streams for trout fishing. He said Fayetteville is surrounded by great streams that provide lots of trout fishing opportunities in a picturesque setting. He enjoys Glade Creek of Mann Creek close by.  Schamp said, ” Fayette County has streams that sustain trout year round; giving anglers the opportunity to catch ”wild trout. Fishing or not, the beauty of the Fayetteville area and the array of outdoor activities it offers attracts me.”

If you’re looking for guided tours Fayetteville is also home to several companies that offer them. If you strike out on the river,  or you still want a taste of the action, you can always just come by town and enjoy some delicious pan seared local Rainbow trout at The Station.
