Join us for the 13th Annual Hidden History Weekend: September 24-26, 2021
Discover more of Southern West Virginia’s hidden history at the 13th Annual Hidden History Weekend, September 24 – 26, 2021. Explore heritage sites, history highlight videos and exhibits, and even challenge yourself to discover more history on your own through self-guided tours and a photo challenge during this FREE event at New River Gorge National Park and Preserve, the National Coal Heritage Area, and the West Virginia State Parks of Babcock, Hawks Nest, and Pipestem Resort.
Here is the complete program schedule for 2021 Hidden History Weekend. All programs are FREE. An adult must accompany children to programs. The wearing of face masks and safe social distancing will be practiced during all public programs regardless of vaccination. Bring water, plus wear a mask and sturdy walking shoes for guided walks. * Be sure to check back for any last-minute schedule additions or event changes.

Cunard Southside Trail- Red Ash Bike & Hike

Meet at the Brooklyn parking lot for a bike ride (bikes provided) to Red Ash. Hidden History Weekend will involve a bike ride on the Southside Trail out to Red Ash Island. The group will bike with a ranger and Community Captain on the Southside trail to learn about the once-thriving communities of Red Ash and Rush Run. Pedal on an old railroad grade and stop along the way to hike out to a cemetery and coke ovens. Mountain biking doesn’t have to be a high adventure sport. We offer introductory mountain bike rides perfect for first-timers or beginners, but fun for all. Before you ride, one of our hike leaders will review the basics with you. You’ll get a chance to get comfortable on your bike before hitting the trail. Active SWV often has bikes available for your use at no charge. Please contact us in advance to make a reservation to attend this hike and if you want to reserve a bike. Take a left on Gateway Road (sign indicates Kaymoor and Cunard). Follow Gatewood Road for 4.6 miles and turn left at the sign for Cunard. Go 1.8 miles and turn left at both of the signs indicating Cunard River Access Road. Follow this road to the river access point, where parking is available. The first mile from the Cunard River Access is open to motorized vehicles. A parking area at Brooklyn marks the end of the maintained road.

Appalachian Tradition: Hands-on Quilting
2:30 to 4:30 pm. Meet at New River Gorge National Park and Preserve’s Canyon Rim Visitor Center picnic shelter, Lansing. Discover one of Appalachia’s oldest traditions by exploring the history and techniques of quilting. Come and go as you please and try your hand at basic stitching to help create a lasting piece of art. Program participants must wear a face mask and practice safe social distancing.
