Fourth of July Events and Fireworks Fayetteville WV

Image result for firework photo free use

Sure you can celebrate the Fourth of July in a big city where the firework displays may be a little splashier, but nothing compares to a small town Independence Day Celebration.  Fayetteville takes great pride in celebrating our Independence Day. Flags will line the streets and the beautiful historic houses will have patriotic bunting draping over their porches. Experiencing Independence day the small town way and feeling the sense of community and small town charm is just magical. The Fayetteville Lion’s Club goes all out to plan a two day Fourth of July Festival in downtown Fayetteville. The main street through town will be blocked off and vendors will line the streets. There will be lots of activities for kids including inflatables. Nothing says summer like a watermelon spitting contest, we have that too, enjoy sack races, and even a frog jumping contest. Stop by the Fayetteville Convention and Visitors Bureaus booth for all things Fayetteville and information. We would love for you to participate in our town craft project to honor our veterans at our booth. Bring a blanket and stay all evening, relax on the courthouse lawn and enjoy some live music. One of the best parts of the celebration is the Independence Day Parade with decked out floats and firetrucks. We go out with a bang ending the celebration with an awesome firework show at dusk on the fourth at the Fayetteville Town Park.

Come early and make it a long weekend enjoying all of the festivities leading up to The Fourth in Fayetteville. We are kicking off the festivities with Fayetteville’s  first Merchant’s Mix and Match this Thursday from 5pm-8pm. Enjoy  a stroll around town enjoying our locally-owned shops and restaurants who  will be pairing up with each other for this special event. Merchants will be set up in each other’s shops offering free samples, special offers, sales, music, and fun!  Enjoy adventuring around Fayetteville Friday day and celebrate into the night at The Grove with Qiet from 8-11pm and Black Garlic at Charlies Pub from 10pm-2am. Start your Saturday at the Fayetteville Farmers Market in The parking lot of The Station and in front of the Fayetteville CVB from 7:30am-11:30am. It is  the perfect place to stop for a wide selection of fresh meats for the grill and berries for your cobblers.  Meet local farmers and enjoy a wide selection of local goodies, from hand made soaps to fresh eggs, veggies, and baked goods. Groove to some Reggae  Saturday with Shayar at The Grove from 8-11pm. Rent a bike from one of the bike shops in town and explore some area trails Sunday, or go antiquing in town.  Enjoy a double dose of fireworks Sunday as Adventures on the Gorge sets off fireworks on the edge of the Gorge Sunday.

The Big Dog Party

Hiking
There are so many great dog friendly hikes in the area. All of the hikes in the New River Gorge National Park are dog friendly. Long point trail is beautiful along with Fern Creek trail, both are popular with pups. I will warn there are overlooks with drop offs, so it depends on your dog’s temperament if you would feel safe taking them on these trails. If you want to avoid the overlooks the Town Park Loop Trail is a great option. Our dogs love splashing around the creek off Wolf Creek Trail. The Burn Wood Loop trail is another great option if you want to avoid walking along the edge of the Gorge with your dog. Stop by the visitor center and I can give you directions and maps!
Watering Hole
Fayette Station
If you have a water dog there are lots of fun places to dip your paws around Fayetteville. A popular watering hole that has amazing views of the bridge is Fayette Station. Take Fayette Station Road, drive past New River Gorge Bridge Visitor Center, take a sharp left and work your way into the Gorge. It becomes a one way road. You will go over the old blue bridge across the river and on the other side you will see signs to park at Fayette station. It is also a fun spot to watch rafters go by and for your pup to splash around along the bank. Waterstone sells doggie life jackets.

Free Fishing Weekend Fayetteville West Virginia

West Virginia’s Free Fishing Weekend is June 10-11th. During this weekend residents and nonresidents can fish in West Virginia free without a license! West Virginia’s Free Fishing Weekend is part of National Fishing and Boating Week. It is the perfect weekend to plan a visit to Fayetteville where we are surrounded by great fishing areas. We talked with Bobby Bower from Pro River Outfitters. Bower is a known fish whisperer and expert guide in the area and he shared the best spots to hit  up this weekend. Bower said some great family friendly near by spots are Boley Lake , Plum Orchard Lake, and Summersville Lake. Boley Lake at Babcock State Park was stocked with catfish gearing up for this weekend.  With the rain winding down the conditions have also improved on the New and Gauley Rivers.  Trout season has come to an end for stocking, but small mouth  fishing is just getting fired up!  Bower said, ” The New River views and water quality are just second to none and it’s a great river to fish.” West Virginia’s Free Fishing Weekend is  a great opportunity  to dive into fishing for the first time. If you already have your license it’s a great excuse to introduce someone to the sport. They might get hooked!

We also spoke with another avid angler, Devin Schamp who prefers small streams for trout fishing. He said Fayetteville is surrounded by great streams that provide lots of trout fishing opportunities in a picturesque setting. He enjoys Glade Creek of Mann Creek close by.  Schamp said, ” Fayette County has streams that sustain trout year round; giving anglers the opportunity to catch ”wild trout. Fishing or not, the beauty of the Fayetteville area and the array of outdoor activities it offers attracts me.”

If you’re looking for guided tours Fayetteville is also home to several companies that offer them. If you strike out on the river,  or you still want a taste of the action, you can always just come by town and enjoy some delicious pan seared local Rainbow trout at The Station.
